Kenneth Rasmussen at Project Ability - Glasgow

Project Ability in Glasgow and The Gaia Museum, Randers, Denmark present:

Danish Artist Kenneth Rasmussen’s
First Solo UK Exhibition

June 3 – July 8, 2005
Mon – Fri, 10am – 5pm

Project Ability, a visual arts organisation that specialises in promoting the work of disabled artists, is delighted to host an exhibition showcasing an eclectic collection of artworks by the Danish artist Kenneth Rasmussen. The exhibition, which runs from the 3 June – 8 July in Project Ability’s Centre For Developmental Arts (CDA) Gallery features just a small selection of Rasmussen’s vast collection of prints, paintings, and knitted and woven textiles.

Kenneth Rasmussen, born in 1971, has been attending Bifrost Art School since 2000. Bifrost is an art school for learning-disabled people based in Randers, in Northern Denmark. The school takes its inspiration from the word ‘Bifrost’, which in Nordic mythology is ‘a rainbow which acts as a bridge from the world of men to the world of Gods’. Rasmussen is one of fifteen students who attend the school each year. Supported by a team of five art teachers, the students work full time in the studio learning lithography, sculpture, painting and drawing. The teachers work individually with the students encouraging them to visit museums and galleries, to study other artists’ work, and to document and sketch the life around them, but the students direct their own learning and pursue their own interests.

Elisabeth Gibson, Project Ability’s Artistic Director explains why she chose to feature Rasmussen’s work as part of the exhibition programme, “ I had been visiting the Gaia Museum of Outsider Art in Randers to discuss a Project Ability exhibition that will be taking place there this year, so I decided to visit Bifrost (situated in the same complex as the Museum) because a number of their artists have contributed to Project Ability’s international print exhibitions on several occasions. I was immediately drawn to Kenneth Rasmussen’s intricate, layered, complex, fantastical and extremely funny lino prints. Then I was shown his paintings. They are a riot of colour and full of sharp and funny observations… I immediately asked him if he would like to have a show in Glasgow. I am delighted that he said yes, and that he has agreed to come to Glasgow to give a talk about his work on the 3rd June.”

Rasmussen is an artist who is driven by the need to be incessantly creating artwork. So much so that it seems that he is sometimes unable to stop… This often has a direct effect on the style of the artwork that he produces. For example, on the long continuous rolls of paper that he covers in words and pictures, and on his fantastically oversized knitted or woven garments constructed from scraps and odd balls of yarn.

Artist's Talk and Free Workshop

Kenneth Rasmussen will also give a talk about his work on Friday 3 June from 1 - 2.30pm at the CDA gallery. There will also be an opportunity for visitors to try some printmaking.

Rasmussen's talk and workshop are free of charge. All are welcome to attend. To reserve your place contact Tom at Project Ability on 0141 552 2822 or e-mail info@project-ability.co.uk
