by Scottish Members of The Batik Guild April 26 - May 6, 2008 Jane Lannagan and Frances Hider Jane Lannagan During a course in Dress and Design in the 1970’s Jane discovered the delights of batik. From an artistic family, she learned very early to enjoy sketching and painting and still remembers with pride when her father, himself an accomplished artist, framed one of her efforts.
This year marks the 35th year that Jane Lannagan has been creating her batik art. Throughout these years she has developed and experimented using the inspiration from the patterns and hues of the countryside in the Highlands. She lives there with her husband Bill with whom she now runs the Tomintoul Gallery where Bill offers a picture framing and printmaking service.
Jane has exhibited and sold her work in several galleries in Scotland and has some new exhibitions lined up for this year and in 2009 for which she is looking forward to creating new work. In the last few years she has worked with children in the local primary schools and has had quite a few adult workshops.
Last year she received a Royal Talens award for one of her pieces of work in “The Artist” Magazine competition held in Nottingham where the work was also sold. Though Jane loves entering her work in the Batik only exhibitions it gives her particular pleasure to see her batiks hanging alongside pictures of the more conventional techniques of oil and watercolour and being appreciated as another way of producing a work of art.
