Donald John MacLean - ‘The Truth – Even if it Didn't Happen’
Lillie Art Gallery - Milngavie

In association with Streetlevel Photoworks, Trongate 103 Glasgow G1 5HD

Hood’s work from 1974-1978 captures a unique period in Glasgow’s social and architectural history when half of the the city’s tenements were being demolished and the other half undergoing transformation and construction. This Glasgow was a ‘frazzled interzone’ as the writer and journalist Allan Brown has written, which Hood’s images reflect without ‘sentiment or nostalgia’.

MacLean’s work seeks to capture the loneliness of life within the realms of a busy city centre, the subjects appear ghost like, lost within the busy realms of the city where people appear like strangers to one another...

Domicele Tarabildiene
‘A Challenge to Time’
and
Borderlands II
Vytautas Pletkus, Artûras Valiauga, Vilma Samulionytë.
Lillie Art Gallery - Milngavie

Domicele Tarabildiene (1912–1985) was a well known interwar artist whose spectrum of creative means and expression was wide - engraving, book illustration and applied graphics, painting, and sculpture. Her poetic and surreal photography, however, has only recently attracted public attention in Europe.

This exhibition presents 19 significant photographs from the early 30s, most using the photomontage technique, and all featuring the artist as the model in the scenes. It places Tarabildiene within a context of a European avant-garde, and something of a pioneer. She is Lithuania’s national artist and appears on a Lithuanian postage stamp.

Whilst the work of Tarabildiene pre-dates the Soviet era, the work in Borderlands II refers in various ways to a post Soviet condition, and covers a range of approaches. The work by Pletkus (b. 1955) ‘Projects without Prospects’ captures something of the desolation endemic in regional areas across that country. Presented as panoramic black and white panels, these are most closely connected to the Lithuanian school of humanistic photography, but in this instance, a melancholic presence is in evidence.

‘Between the Shores’ by Valiauga (b. 1967) is a poetic journey on ferries to and from Lithuania to various ports across the Baltic Sea. It explores that state of being when in transit - while on the coast, one always turns towards the sea. While at sea, one is constantly thinking about the coast. For the artist, through this work the sea is inseparable from a certain solitude, the synthesis of the symbols of life and death. Samulionytë (b. 1978) has photographed some of the 60 civil registry offices in Lithuania, places that grew in abundance following the break up of the Soviet Union, speculating on the loss of power in the Church, but also on the anodyne and bureaucratic feel of these place, at the same time their mimicking of places of worship or passing...

You, Me and ASD
Project Ability - Glasgow

Project Ability and Autism Resource Centre present an exhibition of works by artists with Autistic Spectrum Disorder.

You, Me and ASD showcases the work of 40 artists, ranging from 14 to 70 years old, who took part in two ten-week long workshops at Project Ability. Using various art forms like ceramics, paint, drawing, silk-painting, filming and block printing, each artist reflects upon how autism shapes their life. The variety of the work echoes the breadth of the Spectrum, with some works being very literal and self-reflective, whilst others show the difficulties some of the artists experience in communicating with the world.

The exhibition opening coincides with World Autism Awareness Day 2013, and will take place in the Trongate 103 Foyer...

Sam Cartman - At the End of the Road
Kilmorack Gallery - Beauly

Sam Cartman’s first solo show with Kilmorack Gallery. 'At the End of the Road' presents a new body of work inspired by the landscapes of Scotland and Italy.

Cartman finds inspiration by getting off the beaten track to 'the end of the road', where nature is reclaiming the landscape.

Careful composition, an instinct for colour and a gutsy use of paint make for an optimistic reverence for both the hand of man and that of nature. His work has proved popular with collectors and critics in mixed shows....

New Works by Kirstie Cohen and Christopher Wood
Kilmorack Gallery - by Beauly

Kirstie Cohen layers oil paints and glazes to create her evocative and sought after work. The hills and seas of her paintings capture more than a specific place, they capture the essence and moving light of the Scottish landscape.

Cohen has exhibited widely and to great acclaim since she graduated from Edinburgh College of Art and Glasgow School of Art in the 1980s. This exhibition at Kilmorack Gallery includes larger and more interesting work than ever.

Christopher Wood's work is sophisticated. The physical process of creation is intertwined by the slow abstraction of the subjects, which might be the wind, the sea or the cry of gulls.
Wood graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in the early 1980s, and is an invited member of prestigious societies bearing acronyms (RGI, PAI, SSA and VAS.) He has a score of awards to his name and work in the best of collections. This is Wood's first major exhibition since retiring as president of the Scottish Society of Artists earlier this year...

Jonathan Shearer graduated in Fine Art in 1993, at Gray’s School of Art. Through a process of walking, drawing and painting directly in the highland landscape Jonathan has developed an intimate connection with the wild places of Scotland.

Simon Rivett studied Fine Art at Goldsmith’s College, London graduating in 1984. Having spent 18 years living in and exploring the rural landscape of the Outer Hebrides, Simon understands the depth of this landscape, interpreting its subtle moods and the interactions between its different aspects...

She focused on photographing not only the public perception of strippers, but allowing a glimpse of the private aspect of this line of work. Here she captures the whole process from preparation in the dressing room to the end of the night through a female perspective...
